Ugly Moon // Hallelujah the Hills // Choo Choo la Rouge

  • Myrtle 134 Waterman Avenue East Providence, RI, 02914 United States (map)

Ugly Moon is the musical project of brothers Mike & Matt Mowry, with bassist Johnny McMahon, and drummer Ian McMillan. Known for delivering heavy, guitar-driven folk and indie rock with a raw, emotional core. Their sound is both retrospective and poignant, weaving between tender, contemplative melodies and aggressive, unfiltered intensity. Ugly Moon crafts songs that feel deeply personal yet universally resonant—music that lingers like a memory and hits like a revelation.

They've begun work on their second full length album, currently scheduled to release in January of 2026.

Hallelujah The Hills have been releasing critically acclaimed albums and touring the U.S. since 2007. Dubbed “criminally underappreciated” by Spin and praised for their fist-pumping anthems by Pitchfork, they’ve built a cult following and earned “Boston legend” status. Their genre-blending sound has been likened to “punk rock at the Twin Peaks roadhouse” (Boston Herald), with Aquarium Drunkard noting, “few do it with the style and imagination of Hallelujah The Hills.”

Led by songwriter Ryan H. Walsh, the band’s seventh album, I’m You, was written after the release of his critically acclaimed book, Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968. Featuring Astral Weeks’ own John Payne on flute, the album explores identity with both wild triumph and overwhelming melancholy. Now in their 14th year, Hallelujah The Hills return with their most unified and electrifying statement yet.

Choo Choo la Rouge is like the cicadas—resurfacing once a generation to make a glorious racket. Their debut, Wall to Wall, arrived in the early aughts, delivering sharp indie rock with twang-tinged grit. Eight years later came Black Clouds, and now, after another long hibernation, they’re back—unchanged, unhurried, and unapologetically true to their sound.

Led by Vincent Scorziello (vocals, guitar), with Chris Lynch (bass, vocals) and Jon Langmead (drums, sometimes), Choo Choo La Rouge crafts tight, bristly indie rock anthems—power-chord punchers with wry lyricism, country-tinged charm, and the kind of no-frills authenticity rarely heard today. Their latest tracks mix meaty guitar climaxes, sharp harmonies, and sly, literate songwriting, proving that some sounds don’t fade—they just wait for the right moment to rise again.
