Lollise / Loboko / Modrums DJ Set

  • Myrtle 134 Waterman Avenue East Providence, RI, 02914 United States (map)

Lollise is a multidisciplinary artist from Francistown, Botswana, now based in New York City. After years of touring and recording with Underground System and the FELA! band, she began crafting her own Afro-futurist pop sound, blending energetic percussion, ambient textures, and vivid storytelling through sound, color, and movement.

She moved to the U.S. to study chemistry, worked in a spinal cord injury lab, then pivoted to design and music. While touring globally with other projects, she began writing her own material, developing a distinctive voice rooted in both her heritage and her NYC experience.

During the 2020 lockdown, Lollise released her first singles with DIY music videos, followed by two EPs: Looking At You(2020) and Unborn (2022). Her debut album I hit the water was released in September 2024 on Switch Hit Records. She also co-wrote and featured on Delasi’s 2024 track “Learn from Adversity.”

Her sound draws from Setswana and Kalanga folk, South African bubblegum and kwaito, Congolese soukous, Zimbabwean sungura, Afrobeat, new wave, and art-pop. She’s performed widely across NYC, from DIY venues to institutions like BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn, BAM, Brooklyn Museum, and Elsewhere. Her music has been featured on KEXP, Rolling Stone, Bandcamp, Okay Africa, and WNYC’s New Sounds.

Loboko is a dynamic New York-based band led by Yohni Loboko (Yohni Djungu-Sungu), a skilled guitarist, singer, and multi-instrumentalist from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Yohni has performed with Congolese greats like Fally Ipupa, Soukous Stars, and Zaiko Langa Langa.

He formed Loboko in 2019 with drummer and DJ Morgan Greenstreet, joined by producer and multi-instrumentalist Nikhil Yerawadekar. They’re often joined by special guest Ngouma Lokito, a veteran bassist known for his work with Soukous Stars and on countless Congolese recordings.

Loboko blends classic Congolese soukous, rumba, and modern seben into a tight, energetic small-band sound. In 2023, they released a vinyl single, Kanyunyi / Ekenge, with Brooklyn label Names You Can Trust.

modrums (Morgan Greenstreet) is a producer, DJ, musician, and journalist. He creates and performs music with Lollise (Botswana/NYC), Loboko (DRC/NYC), and Delasi (Ghana), and regularly DJs in New York City, both solo and with the Zona Libre party.

In 2024, he launched Is This Afrobeats?, a bi-monthly show on East Village Radio focused on local music scenes across Africa and the diaspora. He also recently released La Rumba Konpa (Dub Vocal) on Turntables on the Hudson.
